3.50

「若在剎利，剎利中尊，教以忍辱」，剎利此云王種，即大田主。淨名迹示慈忍勝德，故為所尊。教以忍辱者，剎利自在，多恣威嚴，故教忍辱。依四根性，四教赴之，說諸慈忍。

"When among kṣatriyas, he was honored among kṣatriyas, teaching them forbearance": "kṣatriya" is translated here as royal lineage, that is, the great lords of the land. Vimalakīrti manifested the supreme virtue of compassionate forbearance in his trace, and therefore was honored by them. "Teaching them forbearance": kṣatriyas possess sovereign power and often indulge in severity and awe; hence he taught forbearance. According with the four capacities, the four teachings responded to them, preaching various forms of compassionate forbearance.
