Regarding "this body is empty, free from self and what belongs to a self": Second, refuting the self with respect to the space element. The outsiders say: "If there is no spiritual self, how could there truly exist lands and figures? Since what belongs [to the self] is real, know that the self is real." The insiders say: "If so, since what belongs [to it] is empty, the self should also be empty. As with the space element in the body and external space: external space is what belongs [to it]; because what belongs is empty, the self is empty." Regarding internal contemplation: it directly refutes views with respect to the space element. Because the form created by the four great elements encloses empty space, it is provisionally named a body; apart from space, there is no body. If internal and external space cannot be found, then the view of a body is broken; when the view of a body is broken, one is free from self and what belongs to a self.
