Regarding "those who give to you are not named fields of merit": Sentient beings also attain this samādhi, yet possess the sandy gravel of views and thoughts, and so are not called fields of merit. You also attain this samādhi and likewise possess the sandy gravel of views and thoughts; how can giving to you alone be a field of merit? Regarding "those who make offerings to you fall into the three evil paths": Making offerings to the Hīnayāna, once the retribution of humans and devas ends, past conditions will again arouse the karma of the Hīnayāna, causing them to enter the three evil paths of the [stages of] seeing, cultivation, and no-learning. It is also said that if one makes offerings to the Hīnayāna, even if one later brings forth the [bodhi-]mind, failing to have faith in the Mahāyāna, one will mostly give rise to slander and fall into the three evil paths. Just like the monk Victory of Will (Sujāta/Śikṣāsaṃkrośa) who clung to the Hīnayāna and slandered the Mahāyāna, falling [into hell] in his living body to suffer torment for kalpas. This is indeed a cause of transgression; how could he be called one worthy of offerings?
