Fifth, explaining the twin trees: Although the withered and the flourishing were explained above, the words were few and the meaning was hidden. These ten disciples jointly assist the Tathāgata, adorning the half and the full [teachings] to guide living beings to see their nature and abide in great nirvāṇa; this is precisely the meaning of nirvāṇa between the twin trees. The Tripiṭaka's [teaching of] impermanence destroys the four inversions of permanence, adorning the four withered [trees] to attract and receive sentient beings; within each single factor, the four siddhāntas gather beings, assisting the Buddha, the Dharma King, according to their skillfulness, and perfecting the half-character teaching to benefit everyone. If one person has the four siddhāntas, then ten persons have forty adornments, up to five hundred who have two thousand adornments of the four withered [trees].
