問：何以根本淨上更有四種之別？答：如世治皮，通明如水漬，背捨如亂毛，九定如入惱，奮迅如火薰，超越如柔熟。此與數家解薰練不同料簡（云云）。

Question: Why are there further four kinds of distinction above the fundamental pure [dhyāna]? Answer: It is like curing leather in the world: the universally illuminated is like soaking in water; the liberations are like removing tangled hair; the nine concentrations are like kneading; the sprint is like smoking with fire; transcendence is like being soft and cured. The differentiation between this and the various treatises' explanations of perfuming and refining is as discussed elsewhere.
