4.44

「目連白佛」下，二、奉辭不堪。文為四：一奉辭不堪、二述不堪之由、三正述被彈之事、四結成不堪。初文者，昔為居士說法，遂被彈呵。爾時莫知所對，豈堪傳如來旨而往問也。

From "Maudgalyāyana said to the Buddha" below is second, presenting his decline as unfit. The text has four parts: first, presenting his decline as unfit; second, recounting the reason for being unfit; third, properly recounting the event of being rebuked; fourth, concluding his unfitness. In the first part: formerly, when he preached the Dharma to householders, he was subsequently rebuked. At that time he did not know how to respond; how could he be fit to convey the Tathāgata's command and go inquire?
