Question: How can the emptiness of sentient beings enter the Middle? Answer: The Dàpǐn explains that all dharmas tend toward the view of self, and so forth; the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra explains that the buddha-nature of sentient beings is neither identical with nor separate from the six dharmas; this explains that the sixty-two views are the seed of the Tathāgata. When speaking of "dharmas" here, the mind of ignorance fully possesses all dharmas; hence the text below states: "Because the mind is defiled, sentient beings are defiled; because the mind is pure, sentient beings are pure." The Avataṃsaka states: "The mind is like a skilled painter, creating the various five aggregates; within all worlds, there is nothing not created by the mind." It is in reference to this that all dharmas are explained.
