As for the fifth purpose: it explains that the rebukes of the past arose in response to capacities, and though of benefit at that time, they were not yet sealed with the Buddha's approval and could not be called sūtras. If not for the command to inquire after the illness, there would be no occasion to recount the wondrous nature of those past rebukes; therefore [the Buddha] commanded [them] to inquire after the illness. Because of this command, each recounted [their past experience]; thus what was spoken in days gone by was heard together by the great assembly, and all received the Tathāgata's certifying seal, becoming scriptures to benefit future generations. For these five purposes, [the Buddha] next had to command the four great bodhisattvas and the other mahāsattvas.
