From "You do not" to "it" is the third [part], rebuking him for not first entering samādhi to contemplate their root source. That these monks had long planted the wholesome dharmas of the Mahāyāna is called the "root"; the buddhas they originally encountered and their initial arising of the aspiration as a cause is the "source." Since Pūrṇa lacked the immeasurable and unconditioned eight samādhis, he therefore did not perceive the monks' root source. When there are obstructions, one should expound the Mahāyāna therapeutics; why did he mistakenly preach the small [vehicle] to treat them, causing them to loathe suffering and seek cessation? "Where there is no wound, do not injure it" is an illustration using a metaphor. Since these monks brought forth the great mind, of all their wholesome roots, none had any wound of attachment to the Hīnayāna Dharma; suddenly preaching the small [vehicle] to them caused them to generate clinging thoughts, which injured the roots of the wholesome dharmas of the Mahāyāna.
