彌勒知機，何故沒實用權因被呵折？答：是諸天子宜須前聞權教，故彌勒用權為砧，欲顯淨名實教之槌，共成諸天子道器，故示受呵折。其中或有聞彌勒說圓不得正意，因聞呵彌勒即得入也。

Maitreya knew their capacities; why did he conceal the real and employ the provisional so as to incur rebuke and refutation? Answer: Those sons of heaven appropriately needed to hear the provisional teaching first. Thus Maitreya used the provisional as an anvil, wishing to reveal the hammer of Vimalakīrti's real teaching, jointly completing the spiritual vessels of those sons of heaven; hence he manifested receiving rebuke and refutation. Among them, there may also have been some who, upon hearing Maitreya expound the perfect [teaching], failed to grasp its correct intent, and upon hearing the rebuke of Maitreya, were immediately able to enter it.
