"When this was spoken" down to "attained liberation": third, explaining the monks' awakening to the Way. These monks inevitably had to regulate their minds through arising and ceasing before they could enter the correct path of non-arising. Therefore, the Buddha initially gave an abridged teaching on arising and ceasing to regulate their minds. Later, through the Great Being's rebuke of Kātyāyana, arising and ceasing were set aside, and by using the five meanings of non-arising taught in accordance with their capacities, they immediately entered the Way. As for "their minds attained liberation": having heard the realization of phenomena and entered emptiness, they attained the fruit of arhatship. Thus the Dàpǐn, praising the virtues of arhats, says: "Their minds attained good liberation; their wisdom attained good liberation," which means liberation from the cognitive delusions of the three realms, attaining mental autonomy, and possessing the eight liberations.
