From "Just as Upāli..." down: fifth, the examination through questioning. This comprises three parts: first, the Mahāsattva asks; second, Upāli answers; third, the Mahāsattva uses an analogy to reveal true emptiness and freedom from defilement. As for the first passage, it asks Upāli whether, when breaking down dharmas and contemplating the mind to enter biased truth, there is defilement or not. "I said, 'No'": second, Upāli answers that when one breaks down dharmas and contemplates the mind to see the truth, the truth is devoid of characteristics of defilement. "Vimalakīrti... up to... like this": third, explaining by analogy. The Mahāyāna clarifies that the characteristics of sentient beings' minds are identical to emptiness and identical to the middle; freedom from defilement is also like this.
