5.83

問：淨名正用無為破有為。無為只是虛空佛性，何得言用大乘真密行破羅云不真密行？答：羅云既著有為，所有密行皆是有為。今淨名一往將無為破，若了真無為，如如意珠無所不有，故前說無為，次即廣明出家功德。

Question: Vimalakīrti directly uses the unconditioned to shatter the conditioned. The unconditioned is merely the space-like Buddha-nature; how can it be said that he uses the Mahāyāna's true esoteric practice to shatter Rāhula's untrue esoteric practice? Answer: Since Rāhula was attached to the conditioned, all of his esoteric practices were conditioned. Now Vimalakīrti directly shatters them with the unconditioned. If one comprehends the true unconditioned, it is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, lacking nothing; therefore, he first speaks of the unconditioned, and then broadly clarifies the merits of leaving household life.
