From "Vimalakīrti" below: second, directly rebuking him. The text has four parts: first, repeatedly stopping Ānanda's two slanders; second, revealing the vajra essence; third, concluding the two slanders; fourth, repeatedly explaining and directly refuting them. As for the first passage, it clarifies that the true dharmakāya is free from this illness. The reason he stops him twice is to stop two slanders. Speaking of the two slanders: first, [slander by] addition; second, [slander by] subtraction. As for the slander of addition: the Buddha's true dharmakāya is complete in the virtue of severance, without the cause or fruit of suffering; yet to say it has it is to add to it and thereby slander the dharmakāya. As for the slander of subtraction: the Buddha's true dharmakāya is consummate in the virtue of wisdom, which is the eternal fruit; yet to say it has illness is slander by subtraction. Therefore the text below says: "Do not slander the Tathāgata." Now, Ānanda saying that his body has a slight illness embodies both slanders; therefore he stops him, commanding him not to speak these words.
