From "Śāriputra [said...]" down to "[...] cannot ascend": third, Śāriputra excuses himself as unable to ascend. Regarding "These seats are tall and broad": the Lotus Sūtra explains that the emptiness of all phenomena is the seat; the profound breadth of the principle of emptiness is the very height and breadth of that carriage. Śāriputra, the other disciples, the newly resolved, and so forth have not yet entered the Buddha's wisdom and have not attained inconceivable supernormal powers; how could they ascend like the great bodhisattvas? Therefore, although they see these seats, they cannot ascend. It is like a person who sees an illusionist exchanging the one and the many, yet cannot do it himself. Śāriputra and the others are also like this: although they see the room encompassing the cosmic forms, they lack this supernormal power, and therefore cannot ascend. As for why the newly resolved cannot ascend: if in the Tripiṭaka [teachings] they have merely subdued the fetters, their five supernormal powers are not yet the cessation of outflows, falling short of the two vehicles—how could they ascend? In the Shared Teaching, at the sixth ground the fetters are severed, on par with an arhat, attaining the six supernormal powers within the realm [of transmigration]. Yet in comparison to the Perfect Teaching, they are still newly resolved; since an arhat cannot ascend, how could the sixth ground ascend? In the Distinct [Teaching], the thirty minds, although attaining the five supernormal powers beyond the realm, are also called newly resolved; not having entered the inconceivable liberation of the first ground, how could they ascend? In the Perfect Teaching, the ten faiths, although purifying the six sense faculties, are also called newly resolved; not having entered the two bodies—true and response—of the first abidance, how could they ascend the seats?
