Question: What is the Separate meaning? Answer: The purport of the Separate Teaching is that the view and thought [defilements] within the realm are not called "view in one place." Why? These four entrenchments are not the fundamental defilements; they are like branches and leaves that rely on the tree and not on the earth. Therefore, within the realm the view of individuality has various differences and is not called "one place." Nor is it an entrenchment: when one severs the branches and leaves completely, one posits that there is nirvāṇa; this arises through delusion regarding the dharmakāya. If one sees the true truth, nirvāṇa is a single dharma, called "view in one place." This view arises due to ignorance, and so it is called an entrenchment and is also called the view of individuality; this is a view arising from the dharmakāya. If one generates desire and greed toward the primary and secondary five sense-objects of transformation, that is the entrenchment of desire-love. The form and mind of transformation are false discrimination, which is the entrenchment of form-love. Obliterating form to contemplate the mind while still seeing that mind exists is inverted conception, which is the entrenchment of existence-love. These four arise in reliance on the non-abiding, which is the entrenchment of ignorance. Outside of ignorance there is nothing further upon which to rely; hence it is said that the non-abiding has no basis.
