Question: How does the Perfect Teaching distinguish the five entrenchments? Answer: As for the five entrenchments of the Perfect [Teaching], the four entrenchments of the view of individuality and so on within the realm, which are conditioned causal aggregations, arise from delusion regarding the non-abiding; and in entering nirvāṇa with views of annihilation, the four entrenchments that are produced also arise from delusion regarding the non-abiding, being unconditioned causal aggregations. Now, the perfect contemplation of the four entrenchments within and beyond the realm all reach the basis of the non-abiding, thus exhausting the source of sentient beings across the three truths. This accomplishes the contemplation above that sentient beings are like illusions and transformations, the fifth great element, and the form of the formless realm, none of which can be grasped, entering into the three truths. Just as smoke, dust, clouds, and mist, though arising heavily or lightly, do not depart from empty space—the heavy being like what is within the realm, and the light being like what is beyond the realm—this is an analogy for all mundane dharmas within and beyond the realm existing in reliance on the dharma-nature. Just as the light of fire, stars, the moon, and the sun shines to remove clouds and mist, so that when darkness is destroyed the image of empty space appears—this is an analogy for all supramundane dharmas within and beyond the realm existing in reliance on the dharma-nature. Therefore it says, "From the basis of the non-abiding all dharmas are established."
