Now, regarding the statement that the great disciples used their supernatural powers to shake off the flowers: if explained in terms of literal events, when the heavenly maiden scattered the flowers, they all fell off the bodhisattvas, but upon reaching the great disciples they adhered and did not fall off. Śāriputra wished to keep away from censure and avoid suspicion, and therefore shook off the flowers. In terms of principle, it explains that persons of the two vehicles detest the five worldly desires and grasp at nirvāṇa; thus their minds have rejection and grasping. Now, seeing the bodhisattvas' retribution five desires, they also deem them not in accordance with the Dharma, and though they try to cast them off and push them away, they cannot rid themselves of them. 'Exerting all their supernatural power' means that because the arhats abide in conceivable liberation, although they have supernatural power, they have not severed distinct illusions and have not attained the sovereign mastery of inconceivable liberation; therefore, they cannot rid themselves of them.
