Question: Is it definitely that distinct fetters are not severed, or is it the habit-energies of common fetters? Answer: In terms of the Shared Teaching, as with Kāśyapa, they are habit-energies. In terms of the Distinct Teaching, it is because distinct fetters are not severed that there are habit-energies. As the Dàzhìdù lùn explains, there are two kinds of fetters: first, those severed in common with the two vehicles; second, those severed not in common with the two vehicles. Those that are common, Kāśyapa has already severed; those that are not common, Kāśyapa has not severed, as explained above. Now, since this sūtra illuminates inconceivable liberation, it properly employs the Distinct and Perfect [Teachings] for severance. The reason the sūtra has no explicit text to this effect is that this vaipulya teaching still retains expedients, and is not like the Lotus Sūtra or the Nirvāṇa Sūtra.
