From "Thereupon" downward, second, explains the lineage of the Tathāgata. The reason Vimalakīrti questions Mañjuśrī is: above, Mañjuśrī questioned and Vimalakīrti answered that the non-path is the Buddha Path. Now, Vimalakīrti questions and Mañjuśrī answers that the non-lineage is the lineage of the Tathāgata. The etiquette of these two great beings alternating as guest and host is intended to reveal the meaning explained above of practicing non-emptiness and entering provisionality. Its principle is profound and mysterious, and those who have not yet awakened mostly give rise to doubts and bewilderment. Now Vimalakīrti asks about the lineage of the Tathāgata wishing to reveal that the non-path is the Buddha Path so that the meaning becomes distinct. If one knows that the three paths are the lineage of the Tathāgata, one can thoroughly realize that the non-path is the Buddha Path. The text has five parts: first, Vimalakīrti questions; second, Mañjuśrī answers; third, Vimalakīrti questions again; fourth, Mañjuśrī explains; fifth, Mahākāśyapa praises, demonstrates understanding, and confirms it. The initial question, "What is the lineage of the Tathāgata?" is specifically meant to establish that the non-path is the Path.
