From "[From] ignorance down to [the thirst for becoming] are the seeds"—these four constitute the second part, broadly explaining the path of defilement as the Tathāgata-seed. Defilements of the past are ignorance, and defilements of the present are called thirst (craving). Contemplating the defilements of these two lifetimes as being like empty space, inexhaustible, is precisely the illuminating cause (liǎoyīn) as the Tathāgata-seed, and is also the seed of the three Buddha Tathāgatas. As for "greed, anger, and delusion are the seeds," the three poisons are still the ignorance of the past, and the thirst of the present also each produces the three poisons. If one departs from grasping at a self, they comprise the equal share, giving rise to the eighty-four thousand afflictions (dust and toil). If one understands in this way, they are therefore called "seeds." "The four inversions" explains the meaning through distinct gates: being deluded about form gives rise to the inversion of purity; being deluded about sensation gives rise to the inversion of pleasure; being deluded about mind gives rise to the inversion of permanence; being deluded about conception and karmic formations gives rise to the inversion of self. They are able to give rise to the stations of mindfulness, right efforts, bases of psychic power, faculties, powers, factors of awakening, and path [factors]; hence they are the seeds. "The five hindrances" are sensual desire, ill will, torpor and sleep, restlessness and regret, and doubt; they are able to give rise to the fundamental [absorptions], the contemplating, smelting, perfuming, and cultivation of all dhyānas and samādhis; hence they bear the meaning of seeds. Having understood the specific meanings, one will have no obstruction regarding the universal meaning.
