Third, explaining the meaning of the buddha-land: this explains that the elder's son Ratnakūṭa inquired about the causes and fruits of the buddha-land, and the World-Honoured One answered in full. When Śāriputra gave rise to doubt, the Buddha used his spiritual power to manifest the aspect of the pure land, at which time the entire great assembly attained the benefit of the Mahāyāna. When it reverted to an impure land, the assembly seeking the śrāvaka [vehicle] attained the Hinayana path. The title is designated on the basis of this; hence it is called "Buddha-Land." Since this sūtra takes the buddha-land as its central aim, one must clearly understand the meaning of the buddha-land. Here it is briefly divided into eight layers: first, explaining the buddha-land generally; second, explaining the buddha-land specifically; third, explaining the cultivation of the causes of the buddha-land; fourth, explaining the differences in seeing the buddha-land; fifth, explaining rebirth; sixth, explaining the preaching of the teaching; seventh, in terms of contemplation of mind; eighth, applying the meaning of the buddha-land to comprehensively explain this sūtra.
