Question: What are the three kinds of mind-made bodies? Answer: 1. Samādhi-attainment: this is likely the joy of entering the tranquil concentration of true emptiness shared in the shared teaching; hence the Nirvāṇa Sūtra states, 'Because the concentration power of śrāvakas is excessive, they do not see the Buddha-nature.' 2. Awakening to the self-nature of dharmas: this is likely bodhisattvas of the separate teaching, who, although realizing biased truth, awaken and know that there is the dharma-nature of the Middle Way. 3. Inaction: this is likely bodhisattvas of the perfect teaching who contemplate the Middle Way of the four noble truths of inaction and perfectly subdue fundamental ignorance. All are called 'mind-made' because, before launching true cultivation, there is still deliberate intent; with fundamental ignorance as condition and untainted karma as cause, in that other land they receive a body of dharma-nature.
