3. Explaining coming to be born in the fruition-retribution land: If in [the lands of] common residence and remainder one encroaches upon and eliminates fundamental ignorance, [practitioners of] the grounds and abodes of the separate and perfect [teachings] can all be reborn [there]. 4. The Land of Eternal Silent Light: If it is ultimate Silent Light, that is non-birth; in non-birth, how could there be going, coming, or birth? If it is Silent Light according to incremental division: with the lower extinction-patience, the ten grounds have two births; with the intermediate extinction-patience, equal enlightenment has one birth. Or it is said that the first abode of the perfect teaching partially shatters fundamental ignorance and sees the principle of Buddha-nature, so it can also attain partial birth, and so on up to equal enlightenment, all having this meaning; however, because they are bound by the fruit-retribution of the transformation-death of fundamental ignorance, they are said to 'dwell in retribution'. In marvelous enlightenment it is eradicated forever, hence it is said that 'one person dwells in the pure land.' Regarding the preceding forty-one stages: in terms of fruition-retribution, it is called being born into fruition-retribution; in terms of partially seeing true principle, it is called Eternal Silent Light.
