Sixth, explaining differences in expounding the teachings in the four lands, which is fourfold: 1. Differences in expounding the teachings in the defiled and pure lands: Since common residence of ordinary and sage has both pure and impure [aspects]—as for the impure, the five defilements present heavy obstructions while faculties are sharp or dull; sharp [faculties] evoke the sudden teaching, just as the rising sun first illuminates the high mountains; for dull faculties whose obstructions are heavy, one unfolds the expedients of the Tripiṭaka, vaipulya, and the Dàpǐn to harmonize and subdue them, and only in the Lotus Sūtra and Nirvāṇa Sūtra do they first hear the perfect teaching, see the Buddha-nature, and open the secret treasury. As for the pure, like the Land of Radiant Flower, although it is not an evil world, [the Buddha] vows to expound the three vehicles; here too there can be sudden and gradual teachings.
