Question: Did Ānanda compile only the Hīnayāna, or also the Mahāyāna?
Answer: Commentators differ. Some say he compiled only the Hīnayāna, while the various Mahāyāna sūtras were compiled together by Mañjuśrī, Maitreya, and others. Others say that Ānanda also compiled the Mahāyāna sūtras preached shared with the two vehicles; thus the Dàpǐn was entrusted to Ānanda, and this sūtra is likewise. Those not shared [with the two vehicles] were compiled by the great bodhisattvas. Still others say that Ānanda also compiled those not preached shared with the persons of the two vehicles, as the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna states: "There are three kinds of Ānanda: first, Ānanda the Worthy; second, Ānanda the Holder; third, Ānanda the Ocean." Now we maintain that Ānanda the Worthy held the Tripiṭaka teaching, Ānanda the Holder held the shared Mahāyāna, and Ānanda the Ocean held the unshared Mahāyāna. Therefore the Lotus Sūtra says: "When Ānanda heard the Buddha's conferral of prophecy, he immediately recollected the Dharma treasuries of immeasurable thousands of myriads of koṭis of past buddhas as he hears them now, and also recognized his fundamental vow." How could he not fully hold the teaching of a buddha?
