"One who wishes to purify their buddha-land should purify their mind": Beginning from the straightforward mind, there are thirteen phrases; although their names and meanings differ, they all serve to purify the mind. "In accordance with the purity of their mind, their buddha-land is pure": According with the four teachings, four kinds of mental purity are clarified, which means that the four kinds of buddha-lands are all completely pure. Furthermore, the four kinds of mind are just a single naturally pure mind; if this mind is revealed, then all buddha-lands are completely pure. From the outset, the bodhisattva uses the four [forms of the] truth of the path to purify the mind; the first three are provisional, and the last one is ultimate. When delusions regarding phenomena and principle are eliminated, the direct retribution attains the purity of the fruit of buddhahood, and the circumstantial retribution is the ultimate purity of the [land of] Eternally Quiescent Light. When beings of the four teachings, with minds of defilement or purity, come into resonance with the Quiescent Light, each sees purity or defilement—just as when all the devas eat from the same jeweled vessel, the color of the rice differs according to their merit. The meaning of the simile lies in this.
