This chapter follows "Buddha-lands" precisely to shatter the conditioned accumulation of causes and conditions, reveal the inconceivable dharmakāya, and assist in completing the Tathāgata's teaching on purifying the land. The Great Sage's intentions are many; now they are briefly summarized into three: first, clarifying why this chapter follows "Buddha-lands"; second, briefly explaining the meaning of expedient means; third, entering the text to explain it. As for the first intention: previously, at the general gathering, the essence of liberation of true nature was already expounded; next, in this sūtra, the fundamental doctrine of the causes and fruits of the buddha-lands is propagated; for those who do not yet comprehend, it requires superior persons among bodhisattvas to initiate and encourage them. Now Vimalakīrti abides in the expedient stratagems of inconceivable liberation; therefore, he can assist the Buddha in subduing and gathering in disciples with appropriate capacities, causing them to leave behind all conditioned accumulations and attain inconceivable liberation. If their pure land practice matures, then following their karma they come to be born, each in their land hearing the Dharma, being subdued, entering wisdom, and generating roots.
