"When among householders, he was honored among householders, severing their greed and attachment": in foreign lands, possessing a wealth of one hundred million makes one a lower householder, up to ten billion being a superior householder; in this land, one who dwells at home with plain virtue is also called a householder. Here it refers to a gentleman of the household with great wealth and affluence who is called a householder, constantly preoccupied with wealth and profit. Vimalakīrti manifested superior virtue in his trace: although he accumulated boundless wealth, his charitable giving was inexhaustible, and therefore he was honored by them. Following their capacities, he preached the four methods of dāna, causing them to abandon greed and attachment, leading them into the pure land.
