"The Buddha told Mahāmaudgalyāyana": next he charges Maudgalyāyana. The text has two parts: first, the Buddha commands him to inquire after the illness; second, he presents his decline as unfit. As for why he is charged next: since Śāriputra had already declined as unfit, and Maudgalyāyana is foremost in dhyāna-meditation, he is therefore charged next. Maudgalyāyana is the clan name; his personal name is Kolita. His parents had no son, prayed to a tree and obtained him, and accordingly used it as his name. The Mañjuśrī's Questions Sūtra translates it as "radish root", because his parents were fond of eating it, and so marked the son's name with it. Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha translated it as "broad bean", because ancient immortals were fond of eating this, and accordingly used it as a clan name. Furthermore, in order to reveal withered and flourishing and deeply seek their purport, it fully possesses the meaning of the five kinds of benefit mentioned earlier, exactly as at the beginning of the section on Śāriputra.
