"The Buddha told Mahākātyāyana" is the sixth [section], charging Mahākātyāyana. The text has two [parts]: first, charging him to inquire after the illness; second, declining as incompetent. Why he was charged next is because among the disciples he was foremost in debate. "Mahā" means great. "Kātyāyana" is a clan name, named after the clan. Furthermore, its translation is unfixed: some say "shoulder-hump," some say "literary ornament"; it is unknown which is correct. As with the śrāmaṇera Sudatta, who through debate at the age of eight was able to receive ordination; and as with the ten ṛṣi brahmacārins, who all resolved to enter the Way through debate. Therefore the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, "Those who delight in debate are born in the five pure abodes and attain parinirvāṇa in those very heavens." Seeking deeply into its purport, it even accomplishes the aforementioned five kinds of benefit, fully as with Śāriputra.
