Question: How do "coming" and "seeing" differ? Answer: Coming is the three wisdoms; seeing is the five eyes. The Lotus Sūtra says, "to cause sentient beings to open the knowledge and vision of the Buddha," and further says, "the Tathāgata's knowledge and vision are vast and immeasurable," which is this very meaning. Furthermore, bodhisattvas of the Perfect teaching, from the stage of the initial aspiration, know the four ineffables and attain the one mind with the threefold contemplation, the three wisdoms, and the five eyes; looking toward the cause from the fruit, mind upon mind is quenched, naturally flowing into the great ocean of Wondrous Enlightenment; hence it is said, "coming without marks of coming." The five eyes become increasingly clear, and upon reaching the fruit stage, one sees the dharma-realm completely; hence it is said, "seeing without marks of seeing."
