Question: Fruition is spoken of by the Buddha, and prophesying Maitreya was the Buddha's enticing deception; what does this have to do with Maitreya? Answer: The Dàzhìdù lùn says: "When the Buddha sat at the place of enlightenment, he did not apprehend a single dharma as real. With an empty fist he deceived young children, enticing and crossing over all." Although the Buddha initially enticed and led [them] forward, when arriving at the real, [the expedient] must be discarded; therefore, this fault is concluded in order to rebuke Maitreya.
