Question: Why is it that the Common and Distinct [teachings] take conditioned cultivation as self, while the Perfect Teaching takes true cultivation as self? Answer: In the Common and Distinct [teachings], one becomes a buddha by using wisdom, and suchness is merely the cognitive object; therefore, the conditioned is self. The Perfect [Teaching] accomplishes buddhahood by using truth, and conditioned cultivation is merely the adornment of merit and wisdom; therefore, true suchness is self.
