From "At that time Vimalakīrti" downward is the third part: recounting the matter of being rebuked. The text has six parts: first, the direct rebuke; second, Śāntamati's request for instruction; third, Vimalakīrti's brief explanation; fourth, Śāntamati's renewed request; fifth, his repeating the explanation at length; sixth, the assembly at that time obtaining benefit. In the first passage, although Śāntamati held a great assembly of material giving, he did not know that the Dharma is contained within material wealth, so it was not a Dharma gift; therefore, there is first a rebuke and then an exhortation. As for the initial rebuke: not seeing all buddha-dharmas within material wealth, how could it be called a great gift? As for the subsequent exhortation: it urges the cultivation of the great assembly of the Dharma gift.
