From "He also asked" to "as the root" is the third question and answer. First, Mañjuśrī asks: if, because desire and greed are the root of the body, desire still remains after the view of a personal self is severed, what does desire and greed have as its root? Next, Vimalakīrti answers, "False conceptualization is the root." Why is this so? The mind of false conceptualization investigates thoroughly in various ways, saying either that forms are produced apart from the mind, or that the mind is produced apart from form; in reality there are no forms or mind, yet solely through false conceptualization one considers form to be different from the mind, thereby giving rise to desire and greed. Even when desire and greed are completely severed, form and mind still remain; false conceptualization is precisely the entrenchment of form-attachment.
