From "Who, upon hearing such a teaching" downward for one line is the fourth [part], concluding by rebuking the two vehicles and ordinary people. "Xiao" means to resemble, to be of the same kind, and to be good. Bodhisattvas are sons of the Buddha; they resemble the Buddha, are of the Buddha's lineage, and skillfully accord with the Buddha's mind, so if they hear this exposition they can immediately give rise to the mind [of awakening]. Those of the two vehicles lack great capacity and nature, and thus do not resemble and are not of the Buddha's lineage. At the outset they do not accord with the Buddha's mind, and hearing of this inconceivable liberation's entering into the provisional through skillful means, they are unable to give rise to the mind of unexcelled awakening. Hence it says, "Except for those unfilial people." "Those who are stupid, dark, and devoid of wisdom" refers to the lowliest ordinary people, people who lack the roots of good of the Mahāyāna.
