The Baihu Tong says: 'What is a sage? A sage means penetrating (tong), means the Way (dao), means sound (sheng). The Way penetrates everywhere, brightness shines everywhere, and hearing sounds one knows the circumstances; hence one is called a sage.' Here, 'sage' means realizing: severing delusion and realizing the principle, hence one is called a sage. 'Way' is principle. Because of realizing principle one becomes a sage; thus the Tathāgata achieved the Way in the site of tranquility. 'The Way does not become clear without the teaching': although principle is beyond words, relying on words one awakens to principle; thus Jingming bequeathed the teaching in Vaiśālī. 'The teaching does not operate without the person': the teaching is bequeathed to future generations, and without the Four Reliances it cannot circulate; thus Zhizhe composed the commentary at Tiantai. 'These three' refers to principle, teaching, and person. Awakening to principle makes one a sage; relying on teaching one awakens to principle; transmitting the teaching definitely rests on the person. The three matters depend on one another, hence it says 'rely on one another and abide.'
