Fifth, explaining rebirth, in two parts: first, listing the headings; second, explaining them in turn, in two parts: first, a general presentation. Regarding "It is also called coming to be born, fully as in the *Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra*," Daoxian says: The second chapter of the *Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* states, "Śāriputra said to the Buddha: 'World-Honoured One! Where did the bodhisattva mahāsattva practicing the perfection of wisdom, who is able to cultivate accord in this way, pass away from to come to be born here? Passing away from here, where will they be born?' The Buddha told Śāriputra: 'This bodhisattva either passed away from a Buddha-land in another direction to come to be born here, or passed away from Tuṣita to come to be born here, or passed away from the human realm to come to be born here.'" From "From here..." onward, our master explains the two designations. Here it says "going to be born" (rebirth); the *Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* says "coming to be born"; these are merely designations formed by viewing one from the other. Regarding "The two lands are also like this," Jingxi says: Just as it is so when viewing the two Co-dwelling lands from one another, it is also like this when viewing With-Remainder and True Reward from one another. Regarding "There is only the difference of horizontal and vertical": the two Co-dwelling lands are horizontal; viewed in relation to the other two lands, they are called vertical. If so, one can only go from the Sahā world to the Pure [Land]; why would one be born here from the Pure [Land] instead? Answer: The lower eight grades cannot come to be born here; the highest level of the highest grade can perhaps do so immediately, having reached that land and obtained superknowledges, and thus comes. The *Lotus Sūtra* says: "This person willingly renounced their pure karmic retribution, and came to take delight in this place of much anger and harm." Only in the Constantly Quiescent Light text is there no sense of going: for the highest grade it may be so, but for the middle and lower, the principle applies. If the middle and lower did not have it, True Reward would also lack it. For if the middle and lower were not posited, it would still belong to True Reward. Furthermore, if one theoretically posits "going without going," the highest grade also applies; why only the middle and lower? The Sugata's words indeed have good reason, and the meaning of the Tathāgata is truly not absent.
