The ultimate Way is unitary, yet according to the faculties [of beings] there are differences. Hence in principle there is the distinction between the true and the middle: faculties belonging to the Tripiṭaka and Common [teachings] see the provisional principle of mere emptiness, whereas faculties belonging to the Separate and Perfect [teachings] see the real principle of the middle way. The Small refers to the principle of the Tripiṭaka [teaching], while the Great encompasses the three [Mahāyāna] teachings. Since capacities and conditions are diverse and the awakenings to the Way are not pure, Jingming manifested as a householder, praising the greatness of the three teachings, reproaching the smallness of the Tripiṭaka, commending the perfect and real, and censuring the biased and provisional—all with the intention of leading them to feel ashamed of the Small and yearn for the Great, and to enter the real from the provisional.
