Second, interrogating and explaining the four matters, in two: first, raising the interrogation. Second, answering and explaining, in four: first, explaining the initial six matters of the sūtra. Regarding "to sever doubts and encourage faith": at the time of the compilation, Ānanda ascended the high seat, and his form resembled the Buddha. The assembly doubted whether Śākyamuni had reappeared, or a Buddha from another land had arrived, or Ānanda had attained Buddhahood. When he proclaimed "Thus have I heard", the three doubts were all dispelled; hence it says "sever doubts". Regarding "encourage faith": faith enables entry, and wisdom enables crossing over. The unbelieving say "this matter is not so", whereas the faithful say "this matter is so". Regarding "this is called an auspicious sign": initially marking an auspicious sign expresses that throughout the sūtra all is auspicious. Regarding "fully as in the Śata-śāstra": the Lotus Sūtra Commentary and Subcommentary, fascicle one, cites it completely.
