However, receiving the Way in the Buddha's assembly was the work of Jingming, while receiving benefit after [the Buddha's] demise was the merit of Zhizhe, because this commentary clearly articulates the sūtra's purport to bring people to awakening and understanding. Liberation from words and letters is what is meant by "depending on words, they discard words." Contemplating the true reality of the body is what is meant by "approaching the images, they forget the images." "Words and images" is an expression originating in the *Zhouyi*; here it is distinguished in terms of the body and teaching without letting the words impair the meaning. The *Zhouyi lüeli* states: "Words are that by which images are clarified; when one grasps the images, one forgets the words. Images are that by which the meaning is retained; when one grasps the meaning, one forgets the images." As for "causing later [students]...", *bi* means "to cause": causing later students in degenerate ages to investigate the commentary's meaning to reach the sūtra's purport, to attain the path of liberation that is correct and true, and to wander through the gate of the Way and righteousness of the Correct and Equal [*Vaipulya*]. The *Yijing* states: "Fulfilling the nature, it continually abides: this is the gate of the Way and righteousness."
