二、明聞，二：初、約教，二：初、引經總立。二、「藏」下，配教釋義，四：初、藏，二：初、正釋。「小生生大生」者，《俱舍》云「此有生生等，於八一有能。」謂本四相及隨四相為八。大相名本，小相名隨。以此八故，令一切法成有為相。言生生者，謂小生生大生。等謂等餘三相，謂小住、住、大住，小異、異、大異，小滅、滅、大滅。於八一有能者，小相於一有能，能相大相。大相於八有能，謂一大相起時必與三大相及四小相俱起，并一本法，故云於八。餘三大相亦爾。「今亦」下，以生例聞。以三藏實有，故存大小。

Second, clarifying hearing, in two parts: first, in terms of the teachings, in two parts: first, citing sūtras to establish generally. Second, from "Storehouse" below, matching with the teachings to explain the meaning, in four parts: first, the storehouse [teaching], in two parts: first, the primary explanation. "Small origination originates great origination": the Abhidharmakośa states: "Here, there are secondary origination and so forth; among the eight, one has efficacy." This means the four primary characteristics and the four secondary characteristics make eight. The great characteristics are called primary; the small characteristics are called secondary. Because of these eight, all phenomena are caused to take on conditioned characteristics. Saying "origination originates" means that small origination originates great origination. "And so forth" means it equals the remaining three characteristics, namely small abiding abides great abiding, small difference differentiates great difference, and small cessation ceases great cessation. "Among the eight, one has efficacy": a small characteristic has efficacy over one, being able to characterize a great characteristic. A great characteristic has efficacy over eight, meaning that when one great characteristic arises, it must arise together with the other three great characteristics and the four small characteristics, along with the one primary phenomenon; hence it says "over eight". The other three great characteristics are also like this. From "Now also" below, drawing an analogy between origination and hearing. Because the three piṭakas are genuinely existent, both great and small are preserved.
