1.28

以為昔智者大師演是經也，備偏圓頓漸之義、盡方等生酥之體，其旨遠、其道微。微言在茲，茲用不惑，故常外闡其訓、內澄其照，凡百學者望涯如歸。

Considering that in the past Great Master Zhizhe expounded this sūtra, completely providing the meanings of the biased, perfect, sudden, and gradual, and exhausting the essence of the raw curd of the Correct and Equal [*Vaipulya*], its purport was far-reaching and its Way was subtle. The subtle words being here, they were used without confusion; therefore, he constantly expounded its teachings externally and clarified his contemplative illumination internally, so that all the many scholars gazed at his shore as if returning home.
