1.31

甞謂門弟子曰：祖師所述其道甚著，而嗜簡者或病其繁，翫精者則遺其麁。吾欲因而就之以伸其教，刪而裁之以存其要。何如？弟子比丘眾作禮以請。公於是削其淨辭合為十軸，不失舊則，其義惟明。與前部偕行，號為淨名略疏。

He once said to his disciples: "The Way expounded by the ancestral master is exceedingly prominent, but those fond of brevity may be troubled by its verbosity, while those who savor its refinements neglect its rougher parts. I wish to build upon it to expand its teachings, and abridge and prune it to preserve its essentials. What do you think?" The assembly of bhikṣu disciples bowed in request. Thereupon, the Master excised its extraneous words and combined it into ten scrolls; without deviating from the old rules, its meaning became solely luminous. Circulating alongside the previous work, it is entitled the *Abridged Commentary on the Jingming*.
