維摩者，具云維摩羅詰，此云淨名。淨即真身，名即應身。真即所證之理，應即所現之身。經者，訓法訓常。法則群機所軌，常則百王不易。此詮淨名闡化，故曰維摩經也。略疏者，對廣得名也。蓋翦其繁蕪、撮其機要，故稱略疏。序者敘也，敘述荊溪刪略之由，及聖師立教之旨，故云序也。然此六字之題，能所四重：初、維摩是所詮，經是能詮，此指淨名。二、上皆所解，疏是能解，此語智者。三、疏是所略，略即能略，此屬荊溪。四、上皆所序，序即能序，此在梁肅。既攬所詮為經別名，故亦攬所解為疏別目，復以所略從能略受稱。委分雖爾，統而括之則上之五字即序之別名，簡異他序。序之一字即通名也。次述者號。

'Vimalakīrti' in full is Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, which is translated here as Jingming (Pure Name). 'Pure' is the true body; 'Name' is the response body. The true is the principle that is realized; the response is the body that is manifested. 'Sūtra' (jing) means a rule (fa) and means constancy (chang). As a rule, it is the track for all capacities; as constancy, it does not change throughout a hundred kings. Because this expresses the preaching and transformation of Jingming, it is called the Vimalakīrti Sūtra. 'Abridged Commentary' is named in contrast to the expansive. Because it prunes away the redundancies and gathers the essential points, it is called an abridged commentary. 'Preface' (xu) means to recount (xu); it recounts the reasons for Jingxi's abridgement and the purport of the holy master's establishment of the teaching, hence it is called a preface. However, among the six characters of this title, there are four levels of expressing and expressed: first, 'Vimalakīrti' is the expressed, and 'Sūtra' is the expressing; this refers to Jingming. Second, all the above is the explained, and 'Commentary' is the explaining; this speaks of Zhizhe. Third, the commentary is what was abridged, and 'Abridged' is that which abridges; this belongs to Jingxi. Fourth, all the above is that which is prefaced, and 'Preface' is that which prefaces; this resides with Liang Su. Since it gathers what is expressed as the specific name of the sūtra, it also gathers what is explained as the specific heading of the commentary, and further receives its designation from the abridger based on what was abridged. Although the detailed analysis is thus, when unified and summarized, the five characters above are the specific name of the preface, distinguishing it from other prefaces.
