三、明種性各三義合，二：初、問。荊溪云：若佛性有三等者，意欲明同，先從異問。前文雖云道即是性，此但通途消品題目。今問品內種有三不？二、答，二：初、會同《涅槃》。二、「種之」下，結示引證。荊溪云：種相體性者，此中意引四名，名異義同。今之種性即令永異，相彰於外尚與性同，種從內生理符於性。

Third, explaining that seed and nature each have three aspects whose meanings coincide, with two parts: first, a question. Jingxi says: "In 'If Buddha-nature has three,' etc., wishing to clarify their identity, he first questions from the perspective of difference. Although the preceding text stated that the Way is nature, that was only an ordinary explanation of the chapter title. Now he asks whether within this chapter the seed has three or not." Second, an answer, with two parts: first, harmonizing with the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]; second, from "The seed's..." downward, concluding, indicating, and citing proof. Jingxi says: "Regarding seed, characteristic, essence, and nature: here the intention is to cite four names, which differ in name but are identical in meaning. Now even if seed and nature were made eternally different, characteristics displayed externally are still identical with nature, and seeds arising from within correspond in principle to nature."
