Second, from "Taking [the analogies]" down, revealing superiority by recourse to analogies, in two parts: first, positing analogies to explain directly, in two: first, the analogy of repelling an enemy and treating an illness, in two: first the analogy, second the application. Second, the analogy of receiving the lowly and relieving the destitute, in two: first, the analogy. Regarding "what is given away is not much": *juan* (捐) is like *she* (捨, to give away), and *jiduō* (幾多) means "how much." Regarding "ranking as regional chiefs": the "Wangzhi" (Royal Regulations) states: "Within a hundred *li* of the Son of Heaven, [revenues] supplied the officials; within a thousand *li*, they supplied his personal provisions (this refers to what is supplied from the land tax of this territory; 'officials' refers to his documents and expenditures; 'personal provisions' refers to clothing and food); beyond a thousand *li*, regional chiefs were established. Five states formed an association (*shu*), and the association had a leader (*zhang*). Ten states formed a league (*lian*), and the league had a director (*shi*). Thirty states formed a brigade (*zu*), and the brigade had a head (*zheng*). Two hundred and ten states formed a province (*zhou*), and the province had a chief (*bo*) (associations, leagues, brigades, and provinces are like gatherings. Chiefs, directors, and heads are also leaders. Generally, all leaders were appointed from among worthy feudal lords. The provincial leaders of the Yin were called chiefs (*bo*); those of the Yu, Xia, and Zhou were all called governors [*mu*]). The eight provinces had eight hundred and fifty-six heads, eighteen directors, and three hundred and thirty-six leaders. Each of the eight chiefs, with their subordinates, was subordinate to the elder statesmen of the Son of Heaven. Two men divided the realm into left and right, designated the two chiefs (elder statesmen refers to the high dukes. The *Zhouli* says: 'At the ninth rank one becomes a chief.' The *Chunqiu zhuan* states: 'From Shan eastward, the Duke of Zhou presided over it. From Shan westward, the Duke of Shao presided over it.')." Second, the application. Regarding "thereby attaining the manifestation of truth and the severing of fetters": this refers to entering the holy ranks, which is like becoming a regional chief. If one is in the rank of a worthy, it is like being promoted to a high station.
