三、淨名重問。經云「曰何謂也」者，曰是發語之端，許慎《說文》云「開口見舌謂之曰。」淨名既聞文殊廣說三道為種，恐他不了，故此問之，以生文殊訶小之說。

"3. Jingming asks again." When the sūtra says "He said: What does this mean?", yue ("said") is the start of an utterance. Xu Shen's Shuowen says: "Opening the mouth and seeing the tongue is called yue." Once Jingming heard Mañjuśrī extensively speak of the three paths as the seed, he feared that others would not comprehend it, and therefore he posed this question so as to generate Mañjuśrī's discourse reproaching the small [vehicle].
