Second, explaining the fearlessness of external functioning, which has two parts: first, the first two phrases explain external functioning, with two parts: first, explaining the adornment of marks. As for "what is explained by Kātyāyanīputra," this clarifies the meaning of planting the marks and signs over a hundred kalpas in the Tripiṭaka [teaching]. As for "cultivating marks in terms of the real," although realizing emptiness and cultivating the marks and signs, they only see true emptiness; hence it says the truth-principle is not ultimate. As for "through conditioning cultivation," the distinct [teaching] takes before the stages as conditioning cultivation, and ascending the stages as true cultivation. Now discussing the teaching's intent, it refers precisely to before the stages. As for "conditioning cultivation is an obstacle of knowledge," the wisdom of the two contemplations severs delusion for them and is called wisdom, but relative to the wisdom of the middle way it turns out to be delusion. The two wisdoms are precisely obstacles to the wisdom of the middle; hence they are called obstacles of knowledge. From "Lotus Sūtra" down, offenses and merits are discussed across the ten realms, and none are not the three truths; hence it says "deeply realizing." The ten directions are the ten realms; the ten realms are mind alone, and the three thousand [realms] mutually encompass one another; awakening to this is called 'illuminating universally'. From "Subtle and wonderful" down, the dharmakāya is the principle realized above. Because internally they realize the dharmakāya, externally they possess the marks and signs. Jingxi says: that the preceding three teachings are not the foremost is said from the perspective of supersession, using an overarching leap.
